Lynchburg’s Oldest Bookstore & Finest Toy Store. est. 1976

George and Sylvia Givens, a frustrated teacher and a game-for-anything wife and mother, opened Boonshire Books in 1976 in an old gas station on Boonsboro road. After clearing away the fumes and cobwebs and covering up the oil stains with remnant carpeting, they began a legacy that has since gone through many incarnations.

For Local Authors

Dear Local Author

Congrats on your book! In order for us to consider carrying your book or even further, hosting a book signing, we ask that you review the following guidelines before filling out the Local Author Inquiry form at the bottom.

Possibly Stocking Your Book at Givens

Minimum Requirements:

  • Its content must be pertinent to our community or within the interest of our readers.
  • It must be bound professionally: We look at price, writing & editing quality, cover design, binding, and the general quality of packaging. No spiral binding or blank spines.
  • We do not stock or hold events for books published through Amazon, e.g. CreateSpace.
  • Book also must have an ISBN (barcode in order to scan the book)
  • Additional Considerations: We prefer books that are already carried by Ingram, our distributor. If it is not, we highly consider you looking into this option as it makes ordering your book for our store far easier.

If we decide to go forward:

Sourcing: We order our books through major publishers and Ingram. We highly recommend you contact Ingram Publishers in order for them to distribute your book. Again, this makes carrying your book much easier. We make rare exceptions to carry books on consignment since it's a labor intensive process.

If you feel your book fits these requirements:

After you review this page, download and fill out the Local Author Inquiry form. Please understand that decisions are also based upon your patronage here in the past. We give priority to our customer base. Thanks for understanding that we cannot handle phone calls or drop-in visits. Unsolicited samples dropped off or mailed will be recycled.

Include in your package to us: a non-returnable copy of your book and any other information you feel necessary to help us know you and your book, i.e. your background, your relation or the book's relation to the community, photos, notes on the book itself, etc. Write Attn: book buyer and mail or drop off package with completed Local Author Inquiry form to:

The Tainted Cup

Robert Jackson Bennett

"A thoroughly satisfying delight from start to finish."

-The New York Times Book Review

In Daretana’s most opulent mansion, a high Imperial officer lies dead—killed, to all appearances, when a tree spontaneously erupted from his body. Even in this canton at the borders of the Empire, where contagions abound and the blood of the Leviathans works strange magical changes, it’s a death at once terrifying and impossible.

Called in to investigate this mystery is Ana Dolabra, an investigator whose reputation for brilliance is matched only by her eccentricities.

At her side is her new assistant, Dinios Kol. Din is an engraver, magically altered to possess a perfect memory. His job is to observe and report, and act as his superior’s eyes and ears--quite literally, in this case, as among Ana’s quirks are her insistence on wearing a blindfold at all times, and her refusal to step outside the walls of her home.

Din is most perplexed by Ana’s ravenous appetite for information and her mind’s frenzied leaps—not to mention her cheerful disregard for propriety and the apparent joy she takes in scandalizing her young counterpart. Yet as the case unfolds and Ana makes one startling deduction after the next, he finds it hard to deny that she is, indeed, the Empire’s greatest detective.

As the two close in on a mastermind and uncover a scheme that threatens the safety of the Empire itself, Din realizes he’s barely begun to assemble the puzzle that is Ana Dolabra—and wonders how long he’ll be able to keep his own secrets safe from her piercing intellect.

Featuring an unforgettable Holmes-and-Watson style pairing, a gloriously labyrinthine plot, and a haunting and wholly original fantasy world, The Tainted Cup brilliantly reinvents the classic mystery tale.
