Lynchburg’s Oldest Bookstore & Finest Toy Store. est. 1976

George and Sylvia Givens, a frustrated teacher and a game-for-anything wife and mother, opened Boonshire Books in 1976 in an old gas station on Boonsboro road. After clearing away the fumes and cobwebs and covering up the oil stains with remnant carpeting, they began a legacy that has since gone through many incarnations.

The Gunslinger

by Stephen King

This book wasn't the first SK book I'd read, but it was a game  changer for me. It's the first in an 8 part series that really put SK on the map for me. It's incredibly well written and truly shows the brilliance of this often pigeon-holed writer. This book (series) is the center of the SK universe and you'll find references within most of his others books to the Dark Tower series.

The Crystal Shard - Book IV in the Legend of Drizzt Series

by R.A. Salvatore

I really can't begin to express how much R.A. Salvatore's writing has moved me. From his moving character relationships, to his nearly flawless fight scenes, Mr. Salvatore is (in my opinion) one of the best fantasy writers of the last 20 years. If you love being able to follow characters over the the course of  20+ books, I can't reccomend another author more. Though I reccomnd the 4th book, all of the series has been amazing and just to mention this, books I-III are the origin stories of the main character Drizzt and can be read out of order.

Dragons of Autumn Twilight

by Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman

This was the first book I read as an adult. Technically, I guess it was the first book I ever really went out of my way to read. I hated reading, but I judged this book on it's cover and I owe Larry Elmore (cover artist) for that. The story was just as strong as the art and it opened up the world of fantasy to me. This is the first part in many many books to follow it in the series and it's one of the best. It's like stepping out into a field in the fall and taking in fires burning in hearths. It's like tasting home made mashed potatos for the first time or like seeing a falling star. It's a rare gem that never loses it's luster and always brings those warm feeling and memories back every time I read it. It will always hold a special place, both on my bookshelf and in my heart.

The Tainted Cup

Robert Jackson Bennett

"A thoroughly satisfying delight from start to finish."

-The New York Times Book Review

In Daretana’s most opulent mansion, a high Imperial officer lies dead—killed, to all appearances, when a tree spontaneously erupted from his body. Even in this canton at the borders of the Empire, where contagions abound and the blood of the Leviathans works strange magical changes, it’s a death at once terrifying and impossible.

Called in to investigate this mystery is Ana Dolabra, an investigator whose reputation for brilliance is matched only by her eccentricities.

At her side is her new assistant, Dinios Kol. Din is an engraver, magically altered to possess a perfect memory. His job is to observe and report, and act as his superior’s eyes and ears--quite literally, in this case, as among Ana’s quirks are her insistence on wearing a blindfold at all times, and her refusal to step outside the walls of her home.

Din is most perplexed by Ana’s ravenous appetite for information and her mind’s frenzied leaps—not to mention her cheerful disregard for propriety and the apparent joy she takes in scandalizing her young counterpart. Yet as the case unfolds and Ana makes one startling deduction after the next, he finds it hard to deny that she is, indeed, the Empire’s greatest detective.

As the two close in on a mastermind and uncover a scheme that threatens the safety of the Empire itself, Din realizes he’s barely begun to assemble the puzzle that is Ana Dolabra—and wonders how long he’ll be able to keep his own secrets safe from her piercing intellect.

Featuring an unforgettable Holmes-and-Watson style pairing, a gloriously labyrinthine plot, and a haunting and wholly original fantasy world, The Tainted Cup brilliantly reinvents the classic mystery tale.
